General Notes

A friend recommended this place to me, saying they had "the best egg tarts I've ever had in my life". I'm happy to say that the egg tarts did not disappoint! I think I may have a slight preference for the ones at Paderia Bakehouse (my favorite), but they're close. They also have a bunch of other delightful baked goods -- definitely give it a try! I would recommend pre-ordering the egg tarts (they seem quite popular) and checking out whatever other goods they have day-of!

Year of the Snake is a pop-up bakery (pop up bakeries have definitely been getting more popular lately, huh) near Berkeley Bowl West. I think I remember reading that it's a mother / daughter team behind the bakery!

Positives

> Strawberry Creek Park is nearby; great place to enjoy your pastries outdoors.

Negatives

> The pastries are definitely on the pricey side (the egg tarts are $6 each, for example). But it's definitely worth it!

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★★☆ Chinese Sausage Biscuit -- Chinese sausage, (green onion and chives?) in a biscuit. Delicious combination! Interestingly had a flavor / texture that kind of reminded me of 花卷
  • ★★★☆ Black Sesame Bostock -- bostock with a black sesame paste on top -- really enjoyed the black sesame flavor, and the bostock had a delightfully light fluffy texture.
  • ★★★★ Portuguese Egg Tart -- One of the best egg tarts I've ever had. The custard is super tender (probably more tender than you might be used to), and the crust is delightfully flaky. If I could change anything, I might actually prefer the pastry to be a touch less crisp, but overall incredible.
