General Notes

Vanessa's Dumpling House is an absurdly cheap Chinese restaurant in the Lower East Side specializing in dumplings and other Beijing specialties. Unfortunately, the food doesn't stand up to the hype that this place gets - the food is low-quality and has serious execution flaws. That being said, this is probably one of the cheapest meals you'll ever have at a restaurant - you can easily get a filling meal for $5.

Negatives

> Cash-only unless you order over $15 worth of food, which is extremely unlikely unless you're with a group or are super hungry.
> It's weird to me that a restaurant which specializes in dumplings wouldn't have vinegar on all the tables. I didn't even get a pair of chopsticks with my order, I had to go up to ask for it specifically.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★☆☆☆ 北京烤鸭夹饼 -- The duck is too greasy and unpleasant to eat. The flavor combinations really don't hit it for me. Especially the cucumber - I'm very biased against cucumbers and it definitely overpowered the dish for me. The hoisin was too dry and ended up all absorbed by the 饼
  • ★☆☆☆ 生煎包 -- The bun itself is way too thick and doughy. The exterior is greasy but it doesn't have a crispy texture whatsoever. The filling has a strange flavor resembling pickled vegetables that doesn't work well with this type of bun.
