General Notes

Tong Sui is a dessert shop, most well known for their coconut puddings. Their desserts are definitely on the pricey side, but it's definitely worth it! They're so delightful. Note that the hours at the location I typically go to (San Mateo) are a little wonky -- they close pretty early, so make sure to leave enough time for yourself.

Positives

> Their desserts are served in these cute, high-quality jars ... which are great for making other desserts! Like custard-based desserts, jams, etc ...

Negatives

> I don't know about the other locations, but they don't have any seating at the San Mateo location. It is right by downtown San Mateo though, so you could probably find somewhere nearby to sit.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★☆☆ Osmanthus Sweet Rice Coconut Pudding -- decent flavor, but not the biggest fan of the texture. It's a bit too uniform of a jelly-like texture.
  • ★★★☆ Mango Mochi Coconut Pudding -- Coconut pudding topped with fresh mango and house special mochi. The mochi is really interesting and adds a lot to the dish -- it's like a thin layer of mochi. Well balanced, nice textures, good flavors.
  • ★★☆☆ Black Sesame Coconut Pudding -- Coconut pudding topped with black sesame puree and walnut. The flavors are good, but the texture leaves something to be desired. It lacks much contrast and the black sesame puree is a bit too watery.
  • ★★★★ Taro Purple Yam Coconut Pudding -- Coconut pudding topped with housemade taro paste. In my opinion, the best item on their menu. The consistency of the taro paste goes wonderfully with the coconut pudding, and the flavors mesh well too.
