General Notes

The Waterfield Kitchen is a somewhat funky restaurant situated in the cute little town of Winchester, around 6-10 miles north of Boston. I've been here twice - once during their $38 restaurant week special and once normally. They are perhaps best known for their braised short rib (which was incredible), and that in of itself is probably worth a visit. Aside from the short rib, the menu is pretty interesting - it's a bit of a fusion between Asian dishes and New American dishes. TWK is my personal date-night spot that few people really know about (since it's so far out from most places).

Positives

> The braised short rib. This was by far the best, most tender short rib I've ever eaten, and this dish was the sole factor that inspired me to try braising short rib myself.
> Winchester is a really nice place to visit, particularly as a date. It's a cute town surrounded on three sides by water with some beautiful views. The drive along Mystic River Parkway is an amazing experience. The restaurant itself has a nice rustic vibe to it.

Negatives

> Most of their dishes seem pretty solid, but I'm not sure how good the more Asian inspired dishes are, particularly the sushi.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★☆☆ Roti au Vin -- Roasted half chicken, baby carrots, fingerling potato, mushroom, red wine jus. The chicken was cooked quite well - good seasoning/temp, and I liked the texture on the skin. I was pleasantly surprised by the breast, which is usually dry when cooked rotisserie style but was quite moist. The other components were a bit lackluster though. The sauce had a bit of an unusual, somewhat unpleasant taste to it.
  • ★★★★ Charred Brussel Sprouts -- Bacon lardon, port wine reduction, parmesan. Absolutely delicious - who knew that something with wine, cheese, and bacon would be amazing! The flavors are really well balanced - smokiness/savoriness from the bacon, sweet/acidic from the port, and a light creaminess from the cheese. The small thing I might change is to have a bit more of a char on the brussel sprouts, otherwise amazing.
  • ★★★☆ Black Forest Cake -- Pretty good, fairly moist
  • ★★★☆ Creme Brulee -- It felt a bit too sweet, but otherwise it was delicious
  • ★★★★ Braised Short Rib -- Definitely the star of the experience. The short rib was so incredibly tender and juicy. The carrots were braised well, and the mashed potatoes were so buttery and delicious.
  • ☆☆☆☆ Tuna Poke -- Really small portion, tuna is cut into way too small pieces, and underseasoned
