General Notes
One of the best bakeries / bread-focused restaurants in SF. Their bread is excellent, a great meal in of itself. The flavor combinations of their tartines / other dishes are both familiar and innovative; very thoughtful. The charred corn tartine is possibly one of the best dishes I've ever had, period. It's inspiring me to try to experiment with tartines / bruschettas / toasts myself. The vibes of the restaurant, the food, it all gives a warm and inviting energy. Definitely would recommend giving it a try!
Positives
> The vibes / interior decor of this place is really lovely. It is both warm / inviting (love the color of their wood) and also has an industrial-chic energy to it. You can see the inner workings of the bakery from the restaurant, and there's also a small bookstore in the same building!
Dishes Tasted
- ★★★☆ Omelette -- boont corners cheese, toast, fines herbs. Prepared really well, soft / buttery and I appreciate the flavors of the fines herbs.
- ★★★☆ Tres Leches Cake -- coconut soaked chiffon cake, varaian cream, sweet cream, cajeta. Most of the components came together nicely! The puff pastry at the bottom fo the cake felt a little bit out of place though, the structural integrity wasn't great and it fell off from the bottom of the cake almost immediately.
- ★★★☆ Brie Grilled Cheese -- cheddar cheese, caramelized onion, chanterelle mushroom relish. Wonderful flavor combination and prepared well! I'm not really sure what the carrot is there for, but that's a minor detail.
- ★★★★ Smoked Salmon Tartine -- whipped cream cheese, pickld mustard seed, preserved lemon, pickled red onion, dill. Classic combination but executed BEAUTIFULLY. The other components add a perfect hit of acidity / creaminess while still allowing the smoked salmon to be the star.
- ★★★☆ Country Bread -- Eat it when it's fresh -- it's SO warm and fluffy. The crust is a little bit on the "hard" side as opposed to having a more crispy texture, but that's more of a minor detail
- ★★★☆ Bread Pudding -- Fig and honeydew honey bread pudding. Overall, really delightful! There's not much I have to say about this -- I enjoy bread pudding a lot.
- ★★★★ Charred Corn Tartine -- yellow corn pudding, tomato feta salad, corn husk togarashi. One of the best dishes I've ever had. The corn and tomatoes are vibrant, sweet, light, and so flavorful. The other components also work wonderfully, but the game changer is the yellow corn pudding -- it brings a light sweetness + creaminess that truly elevates this dish. A must try for sure.
- ★★★★ Ham and Cheese Croissant -- pain au jambon, gruyere, fried egg, mission verde, jalapeno. This is my first time seeing a croissant halved and toasted on the flat side, which gave the croissant a wonderful crispy texture. All the components are wonderful and well-balanced. The mission verde in particular was the x-factor, bringing a much needed acidity + freshness that really brought everything together.
