General Notes

Situated in Assembly Square, Southern Kin Cookhouse is exactly what you would expect - a great option for legit Southern food. I think that Southern food often gets an unfairly bad reputation (some of which is probably deserved - Southern food is certainly not the most healthy), but the end result can be truly delicious. I don't go for Southern food very often, but I was very pleasantly surprised with the food - while it was not perfect it was pretty amazing. I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try. I would love to go back and try some of their other offerings as well.

Positives

> The food is excellent! Kind of like my overall impression of food in Chicago, the food at Southern Kin Cookhouse is "no BS, good stuff, who cares about health". Probably sounds a lot worse than it actually is, but I was very pleasantly surprised.
> The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice. It feels both comfortable and slightly upscale (the open kitchen helps a lot). Although I think we also might have gotten lucky with our seat - our table was nice and bright but a lot of other tables were relatively dark.

Negatives

> Our server got pretty confused with our order - at first he forgot to put in the Gumbo order, and then later when we reminded him, he put it in but then we got double-charged. This wasn't really a big deal though, since the servers were very kind and gracious, and we were able to get the situation resolved.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★★☆ Louisiana Crawdad Gumbo -- With with andouille sausage, okra and tomato. My first time having gumbo, and it was delicious!
  • ★★★☆ Braised Collards -- Served with smoky bacon. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I was very pleasantly surprised with this dish. The strong acidity from the braise pairs well with the collards and the bacon.
  • ★★☆☆ Rack of Ribs -- Relatively tender, but I found the ribs to be a bit too heavy on the sauce (in particular, a bit too sweet). It also didn't quite have the same mouthwatering savoriness that I associate with ribs, since they were fairly small and didn't have that much fat content.
  • ★★★☆ So'Kin Bucket -- Whole southern fried chicken with maple-fresno glaze, biscuits, and four of our house made sauces including honey-hot pepper, Alabama white, Carolina Gold, and Kansas City BBQ. Well-fried and flavorful!
