General Notes

Shy Bird is a strange new restaurant that just recently opened up in the Cambridge Innovation Center near Kendall. The area has been undergoing a lot of change and has experienced lots of new development, but unfortunately, Shy Bird really does not add anything to the restaurant scene. Honestly a shame, because I find the name of the restaurant pretty cute. Currently, they have a steady stream of customers from the people who work in the area, but I doubt this will be sustainable once the novelty wears off. Or maybe the staff is still trying to get their shit together, and things will become better. Regardless, I will not be returning to Shy Bird.

Negatives

> Shy Bird seems to have a bit of an identity crisis. They market themselves as a hip new restaurant, with a casual but sleek vibe. Yet the menu is wholly uninteresting and uninspiring. They have a seat yourself and counter service system (which I don't really like), yet they charge prices that reflect table service restaurants.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★☆☆☆ Half Chicken -- I got it with the sweet and tangy juniper-pepper sauce, which is basically a glorified ketchup that tastes slightly like cocktail sauce (not good). The breast was disgustingly dry, although the thighs, wings, and drumsticks were quite nice. Beware that the portions are also surprisingly small - their chickens are tiny.
  • ★☆☆☆ Clam Toast -- Amontillado, green olives, thyme. This combination doesn't make any sense - why would you put clams in the shell on toast? I normally don't complain about this but the amount of effort to eat this is just absurd for something that really isn't that good. The clams are also tiny. The olives are a bit overpowering in this dish, but at least the flavor combination of onion, amontillado, the (lemon cream?) sauce, clams, and toast works pretty well.
