General Notes

Serafina is a delightful new Italian restaurant right at the top of Russian Hill. Based on the dishes I ordered, the food is good but not amazing, although I'm fairly confident that's largely because I ordered the wrong things for my preferences. A great option for a more upscale, special occasion dinner. The views from the top of the hill is a huge plus.

Positives

> Serafina is literally on top of Russian Hill. It's right next to the Broadway overlook. The views from the top are really nice and the neighborhood/vibes of the location is perfect for a more upscale dinner experience.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★☆☆☆ Tartufo Cioccolato -- Zabaione cream center, surrounded by chocolate gelato and caramelized hazelnuts, topped with cocoa powder. This is one of only a few desserts I genuinely didn't like very much. I don't like chocolate ice cream that much to begin with, and the whole dish felt very bland.
  • ★★☆☆ Fregola Alle Vongale -- Sardinian pasta with Manila clams, saffron, cherry tomatoes, pepperoncino, garlic and parsley. This dish is essentially a hybrid of seafood paella and pearled couscous. I like the two dishes individually, but this dish doesn't work that well. The flavor of the stock used to cook the pasta is a bit overpowering. At least everything is cooked well.
  • ★★★☆ Calamari Ripieni -- Fresh Monterey calamari, stuffed with olives, escarole, anchovies, and bread crumbs on a bed of potato leek sauce. The calamari is decent, the olives are slightly overpowering, and the potato leek sauce is amazing. I'm definitely going to steal this idea for my own personal dishes in the future.
