General Notes

San Tung is an interesting 山东 restaurant (in fact, San Tung is the Cantonese romanization of 山东) in the Inner Sunset. They're most well known for their dry-fried chicken wings, which is well-deserved -- they are absolutely fantastic. Other than their wings though, I found the food to be about average. Overall, I found that the dishes were a bit too sweet for my taste. Definitely worth trying their dry fried wings, though the rest of their menu is somewhat forgettable. I remember one of the waitstaff mentioning them running out of homemade noodles as we were waiting for our table; that might be worth checking out too.

Negatives

> They're VERY popular (their dry fried wings are pretty famed); expect a substantial wait. They also close fairly early (8:30), so if you get there too late, you might not get a table (even if you get there before 8:30).

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★★★ Original Dry Fried Chicken -- chicken wings deep fried in batter with garlic, ginger, and roasted red peppers. Delightfully crispy but still tender on the inside. Pretty sweet, but I found that it actually worked fairly well in this dish specifically.
  • ★★☆☆ Pork with Green Onions -- sauteed shredded pork with onions and green onions in a light garlic sauce. The pork is super tender and has a lovely texture. The green onion was a bit too raw though, and the dish as a whole was too sweet.
  • ★☆☆☆ Dried Sauteed String Beans -- fresh green beans flash fried and tossed in a garlicky sauce with Chinese pickle. Too sweet, slightly underseasoned and honestly not that flavorful. Definitely not a big fan of pickled vegetables with green beans in general.
