General Notes

Ramen Setagaya is a Japanese ramen chain, with a location on St. Mark's in East Village. The ramen has its draws and flaws; certainly not the best but not the worst ramen I've had either. The good thing is that it's fairly affordable, clocking in at around $11-15 depending on when and what you order. I think that there are many better options in the area, but not a bad choice by any means.

Positives

> The broth was absolutely delicious! Not the most complex flavor profile, but it had just the perfect level of fattiness without going overboard and achieved a level of savoriness that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Negatives

> The restaurant layout and seating arrangement is rather uncomfortable. Essentially all of the seating is more or less bar seating.
> The noodles that they use for the tonkotsu ramen is thin, soft, and overcooked. That being said, I did notice that the noodles they used for the spicy miso ramen was thicker.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★☆☆ Classic Tonkotsu Ramen DX -- The broth is delicious and the highlight of the dish - it's the perfect level of fatty and intensely savory. Unfortunately, the rest of the dish falls flat. The noodles are too thin, soft, and can't stand up to the broth. The chashu is relatively dry.
