General Notes
Probably one of the best bakeries that I've ever been to. I first stumbld across this place driving back home to SF from San Diego, and I was not disappointed. It's the quintessential aesthetic cafe (the interior is beautiful) and service is wonderful. The pastries are eclectic and executed to perfection. One thing I will note, the desserts are maybe halfway between Asian and American desserts in terms of sweetness (which is what I like), but if you prefer Asian desserts you might find this on the sweeter side. Bring a group of friends -- you will be tempted to order one of everything once you try one of their pastries. Or just go by yourself and eat them all anyways.
Positives
> The interior decor is so aesthetic. If someone likes aesthetic cafes, this is the place to take them. The pastry stands, plants, and pastries themselves come together in one of the most beautiful displays I've seen.
> They're a "modern, globally-inpsired bakehouse" -- very accurate. They sell an eclectic and unique combination of pastries that pull from cuisines across the world. And they have some seasonal pastries as well -- they change the cheesecake flavor monthly.
> The service is amazing -- the cashiers, managers, and pastry chefs were lovely to speak with.
Dishes Tasted
- ★★★★ Cookies & Cream Cheesecake -- This is a genius idea, not sure why I've never thought of this but I will definitely be giving this a try in the future. The flavor just makes sense, and the cheesecake is delightfully fluffy.
- ★★★☆ Citrus Refresher -- invigorating juice, minced mint, unique blend of citrus juices. A little on the sweeter side but delightfully refreshing.
- ★★☆☆ Strawberry Jamaica -- hibiscus tea, strawberry puree sweetened. Solid drink, it's a little on the herbal / sour side from the hibiscus, nice and refreshing
- ★★★★ Chocolate Walnut Cookie -- Amazing cookie -- crispy exterior, soft + buttery interior, and the flavor combination is perfect.
- ★★★★ Carrot Cake Cheesecake -- this combination is SO good. It makes perfect sense too, since carrot cake often does come with quite a bit of frosting. Executed to perfection, the crust has a lovely texture too.
- ★★★☆ Strawberry Matcha -- delightful combination, refreshing and delicious
- ★★☆☆ Raspberry Matcha -- Traditional matcha, chia seeds, balanced raspberry tones. An average drink, not too noteworthy.
- ★★★★ Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie -- The best cookie I've had to date (I've never been to Levain in NYC). The texture is perfect -- crispy on the exterior and soft on the interior. It's relatively thick to achieve that perfect texture contrast. The flavor is well balanced and the sea salt is a wonderful touch.
- ★★★★ Ensaymada -- Filipino Brioche. Spiral-rolled brioche covered with a blend of butter and sugar. Available with a 2 year aged white cheddar. The butter and sugar topping turns it from an otherwise ordinary sponge cake like brioche to an amazing pastry. The little bit of crunch from the sugar makes all the difference and contrasts beautifully with the soft interior.
- ★★★★ Portuguese Egg Tart -- Custard tart. Crisp, individually-moulded flakey pastry with a creamy custard center & distinguished caramelized top. One of the best I've had -- delightful texture and flavor!
