General Notes

Excellent Japanese restaurant near Union Square! As the name suggests, they specialize in skewers, and the skewers were definitely the highlight of the experience. Each one that we tried was delicious and executed perfectly. They've got all of your typical offerings, like chicken scallion, but they've also got some pretty unique offerings like bacon wrapped mochi. The rest of the menu was okay, nothing particularly noteworthy. But the pork belly and bacon wrapped mochi skewers, oh man I will be dreaming about those for a long time to come. Would definitely return to try some of their other offerings.

Positives

> They have a happy hour from 4pm to 5:30pm every day; the skewer sampler in particular is definitely tempting. (5 different skewers for $18!)

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★☆☆ Miso Gindara -- miso marinaded grilled black cod, cucumber salad. I usually LOVE this dish, but this was a bit underwhelming. Probably because it was served a bit cold; I definitely prefer it warm.
  • ★★☆☆ Unagi Don -- Fresh eel over Japanese rice. Solid but not particularly noteworthy.
  • ★★★★ Bacon Wrapped Mochi (skewer) -- bacon wrapped mochi, soy sauce, sea salt, pepper. This was so delicious. The chewy texture and neutral flavor of mochi complement the flavor explosion of the bacon. A little lemon brings it all together perfectly.
  • ★★★★ Pork Belly (skewer) -- Pork belly, garlic paste sauce. This is incredible. The pork belly juices literally burst in my mouth. A little lemon juice goes a long way in bringing perfect balance for this dish.
  • ★★★☆ Hokkaido Scallop (skewer) -- Scallops, house mayo sauce, sea salt, pepper. Excellent flavor, nice texture, the grilled flavor shines.
  • ★★☆☆ Seaweed Salad -- seaweed salad, goma sauce. First time in a while that I've had seaweed salad served with a dressing like this, was a nice touch.
