General Notes

Solid Cantonese restaurant in Millbrae. All the waitstaff spoke Cantonese to me, and when I spoke to them in Mandarin they spoke to me in English instead. Definitely a place that locals frequent.

This place used to be called New Asian Pearl Peninsula, but they changed their name recently, although this still isn't well reflected in their name on google maps. It's Won Kok but there are barely any reviews online.

Overall, food is very good. Especially their squab -- definitely worth trying. Would definitely come back to try some of their other offerings.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★★☆ braised fish in clay pot -- pretty good, flavorful and cooked well
  • ★★☆☆ pea sprouts in broth -- the flavor wasn't quite as good as the time I ordered watercress (for some reason) but it's fundamentally the same dish
  • ★★★★ baked pineapple egg yolk bun -- this is so delicious, it's nice and warm and actually like lava
  • ★★☆☆ scallop dumpling -- this is just a glorified shrimp dumpling with a few small pieces of scallop on top. It still tastes pretty good, though
  • ★★☆☆ Truffle Roast Duck -- the truffle flavor is good, but the duck is a little too fatty and not at all crispy skin
  • ★★★★ Purple Rice Roll -- the purple-ness of the rice roll doesn't really do anything for the taste, but it's got shrimp that's fried like 油条 inside and it's DELICIOUS
  • ★☆☆☆ Jellyfish with Seaweed -- it's okay but the flavor and texture both leave a little bit to be desired.
  • ★★★★ Roast Squab -- crispy skin, super tender / juicy meat. Perfectly seasoned. Squab feels like it's really easy to overcook, but this was absolutely delicious; I am pleasantly surprised.
  • ★★☆☆ Golden Fried Rice with Black Truffle -- decent fried rice, you can definitely taste the truffle flavor, not a huge fan of all the mushrooms though
  • ★★★☆ Watercress with Fish Paste -- watercress blanched in fish broth, served with fish paste, goji berries, and some other miscellaneous things. This method of cooking is called 上汤; I was skeptical at first but it's very good! The broth is delicious, super flavorful. The fish paste has a little bit of tangerine peel flavor, which is interesting. Watercress is cooked well.
  • ★★★☆ Chicken Feet -- this was prepared surprisingly well -- perhaps from the way it was fried, the texture was excellent and bubbly
