General Notes

Izakaya-style restaurant in the heart of Ashland. Apparently, owned and operated by the same team behind MAS, which is right next door and a well known fine-dining restaurant in the town. Most items on the menu are excellent, although they do have a few notable misses (the yakisoba ... what were they thinking?). Definitely focus on their seafood dishes, which are some of the best I've had. With that being said, the food is also _very_ expensive, especially for the portions that you get (which are quite small). Expect to spend upwards of $100 per person.

Positives

> They have a lot of different sakes that you can "taste", or get 1oz pours for. It's a nice way to experience / try a bunch of different drinks. They also have a non-alcoholic sake, which honestly doesn't taste like sake at all, it feels more like a grape juice.

Negatives

> They have an open-kitchen layout, where the bar / kitchen is all in the middle, and it's surrounded by bar seats. The seating itself is fine, but be warned that after coming here it is very likely that your clothing will smell quite strongly of food here.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★☆☆ sobacha panna cotta -- milk crumble, strawberry gastrique. The panna cotta and milk crumble are delicious, but the strawberry gastrique is ... weird. It's way too sour and adds a little bit of a weird taste. If it was made with (less) lemon juice instead of vinegar, it would be a lot better.
  • ★★★★ roasted hiramasa kama -- tare, clarified butter. The best dish of the night, in my opinion. Super tender, packed with flavor, and so juicy.
  • ☆☆☆☆ pork belly yakisoba -- tare, pickled carrot, scallion. Way too sweet, almost sickeningly so. I have no idea why this dish is $35 (one of the most expensive items on the menu); it's literally just a tiny bowl of below-average yakisoba.
  • ★★★★ halibut crudo -- nuoc cham, shichimi, lemon oil. Amazing!
  • ★★★★ trout crudo -- ponzu, aonori, togarashi, lemon oil. This is delicious, some of the best crudo I've had. The flavor combination comes together nicely.
  • ★★★☆ halibut hand roll -- lemon oil, togarashi
  • ★★★☆ trout hand roll -- bonito, toasted sesame
  • ★★☆☆ sushi rice -- aonori, toasted sesame. A little overseasoned / too much acidity for me
  • ★★☆☆ cup of dashi -- clarified butter, scallion. Decent flavor, goes nicely with sushi rice
