General Notes
A typical Japanese restaurant, with a massive menu and an emphasis on interesting starters and specialty rolls. Overall pretty solid; a bit on the pricier side but a good experience. Most of the rolls were pretty average and not particularly noteworthy.
Dishes Tasted
- ★☆☆☆ Jet Bunny Jr -- raw scallops spiked with yuzu-koshu, ripe mango, and cucumbers rolled up and then dusted in yuzu shichimi furikake, topped with a sweet potato bunny. This flavor is ... weird. I didn't like it too much.
- ★★☆☆ Haleakala Maki -- albacore poke with ogo seaweed, red clay salt, sesame oil, with cucumber and avocado, topped with torched kissed albacore then finished with crunchy, spicy garlic and green scallions.
- ★★☆☆ Carmel -- shrimp tempura, avocado, and cucumber topped with avocado, ebi, unagi, unagi sauce, and sweet chili sauce.
- ★★☆☆ Akasaka Nights -- shrimp tempura and spicy kani topped with hamachi, furikake, house-made chili oil. Spicy and rich.
- ☆☆☆☆ Katsu Donburi -- The pork itself is dry and lacks any semblance of crispiness. The rice is a little too soggy / wet. Otherwise the components are okay, but it's hard to go too wrong with katsu don.
- ★★★☆ Tokyo Karaage -- garlic, ginger soy marinaded fried chicken. Pretty unusual flavor but it works well and it's cooked well.
- ★★★★ Brentwood Corn Kakiage -- fresh organic Brentwood corn tossed in potato starch and then dipped in tempura batter. Finished with maldon sea salt to make that corn sweetness pop. This dish is incredible. My only wish is that the corn clump together into bigger pieces because as is it's quite challenging to eat.
- ★★☆☆ Bacon Wrapped Mochi -- pounded rice mochi wrapped in bacon and topped with house-made chili oil and shichimi. Flavor is excellent. I found the mochi to be a bit too soft (I think it needed a little more chewiness for this particular dish). Warning: it's actually pretty spicy.
- ★☆☆☆ Ahi Coconut Katsu -- Ahi tuna steak rolled in coconut and panko and pan-seared; topped with kewpie, eel sauce, and sriracha. We ordered it because we were curious (never had anything quite like this), but I was not a big fan of this textural combination.
