General Notes

Katz's Delicatessen is perhaps one of New York's most well known restaurants, a Jewish deli dating back to 1888. They are most well known for their pastrami and corned beef; I had a pastrami sandwich and it did not disappoint. It was tender, juicy, and intensely flavorful. The restaurant has a very old school vibe that carries into the food, which unfortunately means that there are some flaws in the food that detract from the experience slightly. That being said though, the food is still very good. Many people would call this place a tourist trap, but I think the food stands up to the hype and it's worth a try.

Positives

> Several videos that I've watched have advertised Katz as a cash-only institution; this no longer seems to be true as I paid in credit card in the back counter without any problems.

Negatives

> A bit on the expensive side given the food and service ($22.45 for a pastrami sandwich), but within the realm of reasonable given just how much meat they give you in each sandwich.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★★☆ Pastrami Sandwich on Rye -- The pastrami is absolutely amazing. Flavorful, juicy (with plenty of fat), and tender. I'd recommend getting some mustard, which helps round out and balance the flavor. The bread, however, is a bit disappointing - it has a dry and crumbly texture. It would be so much better if lightly toasted. Perhaps the club bread is a bit better in this regard.
