General Notes
Excellent restaurant in Milpitas Square specializing in Yunnan cuisine, apparently with a Californian kick (according to the restaurant), although I can't quite tell where the California kick is coming from. My first time really having Yunnan food, and it was pretty incredible. I was especially impressed by the stir fry cheung fun, which seemed like a very odd concept but tasted so, so good. Would definitely go back again to try some of their other offerings. Note that their Google reviews are probably inflated because they have a deal where if you leave a google review they'll give you a random drink for free, but in this case it's actually really good.
Dishes Tasted
- ★★★★ Banana Leaf Wrapped Sea Bass -- 芭蕉叶包烧鱼. whole sea bass, cilantro, rau rum (Vietnamese coriander), galanga, wrapped and steamed in banana leaf, coconut and yellow pepper sauce. SUPER tender, the flavor of the sauce is pretty good. Be careful with the chili peppers though -- they're VERY spicy.
- ★★☆☆ Crispy Oyster Mushroom Tempura -- 酥脆炸蘑菇. king oyster mushroom, in-house toasted pepper salt. Tastes pretty similar to Taiwanese style popcorn chicken, pretty good but not super noteworthy.
- ★★★☆ Lemongrass Pot Chicken -- 香茅油焖鸡. lemongrass pot chicken, si gua squash, potato, tomato. Pretty good flavor, chicken is super tender, goes great with some rice.
- ★★★★ Stir Fried Cheung Fun -- 酸腌菜火腿炒肠粉. rice flour cheung fun, yunnan fermented mustard leaf, bacon, chive, and garlic oil. This is one of the greatest dishes I've ever had. Amazing texture on the cheung fun -- soft on the inside, crispy on the outside. Excellent flavor combination, the light acidity from the fermented mustard leaf and the smokiness from the bacon do wonders for this dish.
