General Notes

Jiang Diner is a small restaurant in East Village specializing in northwestern Chinese food. The menu is unique and not quite like most other restaurants I've been to; one of the few times I've actually seen 羊肉烧卖 on a menu outside of China. Good quality food at a very reasonable price. I didn't think it was quite the mindblowingly good level of Dun Huang, but it's very possible I just ordered the wrong items. Certainly would return, and I'd recommend giving this place a try.

Positives

> Food is very heavy handed on the cumin. This is generally a plus for me.
> The menu is designed really well - short and concise but with enough variety, with a variety of options suitable for a group or solo diner.
> Very reasonably priced; you can easily get a high quality filling dinner for $15pp.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★☆☆ 羊肉烧卖 -- Generally, I love cumin but I felt that it went a bit overboard here - it didn't mesh well with the vinegar. That being said, the flavor was still good, and it was very well-seasoned. Decent texture, but I generally prefer my 烧卖 to have more moist, looser filling than a coagulated ball.
  • ★★★☆ 酱香炒年糕(牛) -- Decent flavor. The traditional sauce pretty good and flavorful, though something about it feels slightly off (I can't pinpoint exactly what it is). The rice cakes are cooked well, though I'm surprised they're the cylindrical ones instead of the flat ones. The beef could be slightly more tender, but it was super flavorful and when a bite of the beef and rice cake together is wonderful.
