General Notes
Hot Johnnie's is a sandwich shop in the Castro, specializing in their pastrami sandwiches. The flavor on their pastrami is incredible; that smoky flavor is delicious and permeates through the meats. Unfortunately, that's where the good parts end -- everything else is mediocre. I would have liked more, especially the texture of the meat, as well as the other components in the sandwich. I'd prefer Deli Board any day, but still a decent option. Note: they don't have indoor seating, but they have outdoor patio seating in the back. It can get chilly but they do have heaters interspersed throughout.
Dishes Tasted
- ☆☆☆☆ Apple Coleslaw -- This tasted awful. Apple does not work in coleslaw, and it had very little flavor.
- ★★☆☆ Reuben Sandwich -- Overall good sandwich, but lacking a bit in terms of balance of flavor.
- ★★☆☆ Dutch Crunch Pastrami Sandwich -- smoked pastrami, muenster cheese, pepperoncini spread, house pickles, fresh dill, dutch crunch roll. The pastrami had an incredible smoked flavor, but I found the meat itself to be a bit dry. It definitely needed a bit more fat content. The rest of the components were good (could have used a little more spread). The dutch crunch roll was a touch too "hard" for my texture on the outside. Would likely choose a different option next time, maybe the ruben.
- ★☆☆☆ Waffle Fries -- These were fried well but ... had a really weird "hallow" texture to them. It felt like they had no substance and I was just biting into the crisp on the outside, which was not the most pleasant experience.
