General Notes

Hed 11 is the sister restaurant to hed verythai, the more upscale version. They offer a $139 11-course tasting menu. They also have a 5-course lunch menu for $40, which also seems interesting. Overall, the food was quite good (as well as a surprisingly large amount of dishes / food at its price point), but there wasn't really any particular dish that was really "wow" for me.

Negatives

> The pacing of the dishes felt pretty off, some of the dishes came in short succession (before we finished the previous one), while there were long waits in between other dishes.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★☆☆☆ special cheesecake -- served as a special birthday dessert. I don't really remember this one super well, but I remember it having a weird savory component (fried onion strips / garlic, perhaps?) which made it taste really odd
  • ★★★☆ mango sticky rice ice cream -- with puffed rice. The ice cream surprisingly does in fact taste just like mango sticky rice. And it looks like a mango too! The puffed rice and mango sauce are a nice accompaniment
  • ★☆☆☆ raspberry sorbet -- i'm generally not the biggest fan of sorbet, a little too sour, the berries can't stand up to it in terms of flavor.
  • ★★★☆ baby lamb rack with turmeric rice -- lamb is cooked perfectly, i like the curry / accompaniment
  • ★★★☆ heirloom tomatoes salad -- with northern style dressing. nice and refreshing
  • ★☆☆☆ southern style crab curry -- with bitter bean and hawaiian ugo. Not a fan of the flavor combination of this, especially the bitter bean.
  • ★★★☆ black cod in tom yum soup -- i like the black cod -- super tender and savory, the tom yum soup is not my favorite though, although it does feel like it goes decently well with the black cod.
  • ★☆☆☆ yellowtail amberjack sashimi salad -- with tangerine and namprik. Not a big fan of this one. The flavor doesn't really permeate the fish. The texture of the fish doesn't feel the best either.
  • ★★★☆ hokkaido scallop -- in thai style papaya salad and rice noodle. Each of the components are great and the scallops are cooked perfectly, the combination feels a bit arbitrary though.
  • ★☆☆☆ escargot in thai pesto -- pretty unspectacular
  • ★★★☆ chicken skin with cashew -- quite good, i really like the flavors on the cashews.
  • ★★☆☆ tomkha spot-prawn taco -- decent, the spot prawn feels a touch overcooked but the flavor is nice.
  • ★★☆☆ sea crab dip in red curry -- with grilled sticky rice. A little bit annoying to eat, and the textures are a little bit odd. Flavor is decent.
  • ★★★☆ thai style kumamoto oyster -- sour green chili sauce + ikura. paired with house-made thai whiskey. Delicious! The whiskey is nice too, it goes down super smooth
