General Notes

Flour and Branch is a new upscale dessert shop / bakery / cafe in SoMa. They have an interesting combination of offerings, including various cookies, kouign-amann, stuffed french toast, and challah. I passed by it on 12/06/21 as I was walking home, and I could have sworn I had never seen this shop before. Turns out my suspicions were correct because they literally opened on that day! The pastries are delightful (although very expensive) and the service is lovely. Note that their cookies are soft cookies -- they won't have much of a textural contrast but I would definitely recommend warming them up for a few minutes in the oven.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★★☆ Kouign-amann + vanilla cream -- Amazing flavor and delightful texture. The vanilla cream goes SO WELL with this pastry. The caramelized sugar crust is actually slightly too salty for my taste, but otherwise amazing. Of course the kouign-amann at Arsicault are still better, but that's a high bar to meet.
  • ★★★☆ The Salty Sombitch -- "Butterscotch reinvented, but Grandmother would approve". Deep flavor with the butterscotch, chocolate, and toffee. The Maldon sea salt brings everything together. Delicious!
  • ★★☆☆ The Brookie -- "A brownie, a cookie, and a peanut butter cup all in one? No, you're not dreaming." The peanut butter is a bit overpowering, but I love everything else about the cookie. Soft with a texture that is truly a mix between a cookie and a brownie. The crispy flakes at the top are a nice touch too.
