General Notes

Dominique Ansel Bakery is a fairly well-known French bakery in SoHo. A few of their items are truly out there (like the cookie shot or frozen s'mores), but their menu also contains a lot of really well-executed, traditional, difficult-to-make French pastries like (like Kouign Amann, caneles). Definitely worth a try.

Positives

> The interior is really nice - they have a pretty large outdoor "garden" in the back! There is actually quite a lot of seating despite how small the space looks.

Negatives

> The hours can be a bit inconvenient. It closes at 7pm on most weekdays, so it can be difficult to find time to come here after dinner. Realistically you'd probably want to come on a weekend morning.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★★☆ DKA (Dominique's Kouign Amann) -- Excellent. A "tender, flaky, croissant-like dough with a caramelized crunchy crust" - pretty accurate. Kind of like a perfect hybrid between a croissant and turnover. According to FoodWishes, it's one of the most difficult and best pastries. Definitely recommend giving it a try!
  • ★★☆☆ Cookie Shot -- Essentially a soft chocolate chip cookie, but in the shape of a shot glass, lined with a thin layer of chocolate on the inside and filled with "Madagascan vanilla milk". A bit of a strange concept - I'm not a huge fan of straight milk but the cookie part was delicious. The chocolate helped prevent the cookie from getting too soggy, and the bottom (where a bit of milk and cookie combined) was really good.
