General Notes
Burma Love is an interesting Burmese restaurant. There's two locations -- one in downtown right by Powell Station (which is the one I went to), and one in the Mission. They're both owned by the same people behind Burma Superstar. Unfortunately, I enjoyed Burma Superstar quite a bit more than Burma Love. I'm not entirely sure why, but the food simply didn't hit as well. The downtown location is fairly spacious and does have some nice outdoor seating. I hear that the Mission location can get a bit cramped and hot, especially if you sit close to the kitchen.
Dishes Tasted
- ★☆☆☆ Wok Tossed Chili (lamb) -- wok tossed lamb cooked with onions, chilis, and basil. It's an okay dish, the lamb is decently tender but the flavor was not there. Seemed like it needed a bit of sauce.
- ★★☆☆ Fried Banana -- Banana and jackfruit wrapped in spring rolls served with vanilla ice cream topped with brown sugar and cinnamon crumble. Overall, solid dish!
- ★★☆☆ Black Rice Pudding -- black rice with caramelized coconut milk, topped with toasted sesame seeds, brown sugar, and a cinnamon crumble, and Buko ice cream served on a hot skillet. The rice felt slightly undercooked, but overall the flavors were great. Cooking the black rice with the coconut milk did wonders for the dish
- ★★☆☆ Dried Fried String Beans -- stir fried string beans cooked with garlic, soy, and chili sauce. Pretty good overall, it's a little too sweet for my taste and it feels slightly greasy perhaps from the chili sauce.
- ★☆☆☆ Tea Leaf Salad -- fermented tea leaves, nuts, beans, garlic, lettuce. This simply did not taste very good. It felt like it needed a touch more acidity and some of the nuts were simply inedible.
- ★☆☆☆ Appetizer Sampler -- skillet shrimp, salt and pepper calamari, vegetarian samusas, platha with vegetarian curry dip. The platha and samusas were decent. The skippet shrimp was tender but had a very strange flavor. The salt and pepper calamari was hard as a rock and just not cooked well.
