General Notes
A pretty interesting Thai restaurant in SoMa. I've had somewhat mixed experiences. The first time I came, I thought the food was mediocre and looked better than it tasted. The second time I came, I was quite pleased by a lot of their bar snacks. Pretty affordable (and they have some pretty interesting drinks too), solid happy hour, and apparently has been around since 1995.
Positives
> They have a pretty extensive happy hour from 5-6pm, where all of the bar snacks are $8. It isn't a huge discount, but the bar snacks are definitely their more interesting parts of the menu (and each bar snack is pretty hefty), so it can make a lot of sense to get here early, order a bunch of bar snacks, and share them.
Dishes Tasted
- ★☆☆☆ Bpik Gai Tod -- fried lemongrass wings, chili, scallions. Not my favorite; the crust was just unpleasantly hard as opposed to crispy.
- ★★★☆ Mango Sticky Rice -- pretty solid and yummy all around; great quality mango.
- ★★☆☆ Beef Roti-tTaco -- Lovely flavor (the panang curry is lovely), but again the roti-taco is just bizarre.
- ★★☆☆ Chicken Roti-Taco -- Same complaint as above, but I enjoyed the yellow curry braised chicken quite a lot
- ★☆☆☆ Veggie Roti-Taco -- The flavor is solid but ... I really don't like the concept of this dish. Roti is much larger and more flimsy in construction so it doesn't make sense to eat it like a roti. I'd much prefer the roti served on the side.
- ★★☆☆ Eggplant Skewer -- Decent, but not particularly noteworthy.
- ★★★☆ Grilled Cauliflower Skewer -- This was delightful! Lovely char
- ★★★☆ Goong Gra Bog -- crispy wrapped whole tiger prawns -- very tasty (the batter complements the prawns quite well)
- ★★★☆ Brussel Sprouts Tod -- fried brussel sprouts, lemon zest. This is simple but SO GOOD, probably because of it being deep fried. I do wish there were a bit more substance; I feel like the majority of the dish is loose leaves
- ★☆☆☆ Gaeng Gari -- braised half chicken, yellow curry, onions, fingerling potatoes, fried shallots, scallion. Not necessarily bad per-se, but the curry was extremely bland. The potatoes were nice, but I have no idea why they served a half-chicken. It seems a bit silly; most of it was breast and that was DEFINITELY not suitable for braising. Would much rather prefer chunks of chicken thigh. At least it looks quite pretty.
- ★★☆☆ Paupia -- Crispy vegetable rolls -- pretty solid
