General Notes

Blatantly unhealthy but incredibly delicious; that is the heart of the Chicago food scene and Au Cheval exemplifies that perfectly. They are most well known for their burgers and for good reason; they have one of the best burgers I've had. At this point, I've been to both the New York and Chicago locations; the food at both is pretty similar but the Chicago location definitely has more energy to it; it's much more prominent on the street and generally just has way more people. Apparently, au cheval means "to put an egg on it", which is pretty appropriate considering that many of their dishes allow you to put an egg on it.

Negatives

> This restaurant is VERY popular. I came here on a rainy Tuesday night at 7:30pm by myself, and waited about an hour before I was able to get seated. Expect a long wait, even during non-peak hours. The good news is that the neighborhood is quite nice, and has a lot of fun things to explore.

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★★☆ Single Cheeseburger -- cooked perfectly medium by default. Interestingly, their "single cheeseburger" is actually two 4oz patties, and their "double cheeseburger" is three. Definitely go with the single; it's already massive. Their bacon is thick-cut and sumptuous, and adding an egg isn't a bad idea either. I don't know if you can, but I'd honestly ask for a second pickle because the burger is so greasy and heavy.
  • ★★★☆ Roasted Marrow Bones -- beef cheek marmalade and toast. This is absolutely incredible, it's so intensely savory (but also very heavy, so don't order too much; one order is probably good for ~4 people, I ordered a half order for myself). I would have liked something a touch more acidic, like some capers to pair with it, but that's a minor nit.
