General Notes

Arzu Uyghur Cuisine is a hidden gem in Newark that deserves a lot more recognition. I have a strong bias for food from western China, and I'm really happy to see more restaurants serving food from the area (according to Yelp, this place just recently opened in April 2019). The food was incredible - while I mostly ordered dishes that I was already somewhat familiar with, each item was flavorful and prepared with precision. The food was at least on par with, if not better than every restaurant serving western Chinese food in New York that I visited. I absolutely would recommend giving this place a try.

Positives

> The food was incredible. I'll let my description of the dishes do the talking.
> My server was really friendly. She also gave me a small complimentary cup of their milk tea! Milk tea from western China is typically served slightly salty. Personally not my favorite drink, but it was made pretty well.
> Complementary starter of vinegar lettuce with black pepper and sesame oil. Crisp, refreshing, and perfect level of seasoning/acidity. Delicious!

Dishes Tasted

  • ★★★★ 大盘鸡 (Tohu Qordiki) -- Absolutely amazing. The chicken is tender and moist, and I like how the dish uses all parts of the chicken. The braising liquid is the perfect consistency and incredibly flavorful. The noodles are springy and chewy. An incredible dish and great value as well - the "medium" is huge at $15.95. I really like the presentation and the way the bell peppers and scallions were sliced into slivers.
  • ★★★☆ 羊肉串 (Kawap) -- These lamb skewers are remarkably tender. Well seasoned and flavorful as well. I would have liked a bit more fat, but that's really nitpicking.
